To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing in recommendation of The Attachment Place (TAP) and Sharon Fuller.
I adopted my daughter at age 2 years, 9 months; unfortunately, it quickly became apparent that she suffered from Fetal Alcohol Exposure and Reactive Attachment Disorder. Though I was quite versed in both conditions, in twelve years, I was unable to make much progress with my child at home. It was clear that my daughter would never be able to address the complex constellation of her conditions inside a loving, and even knowledgeable, home.
As a parent, it is extremely difficult and heartbreaking to confront the reality that one’s child requires in-patient treatment. It is even more terrifying confronting the need to find a creditable program that is worthy of trust with one’s child. Fortunately, I found TAP to be a wonderful placement for my child. Ms. Fuller was kind, compassionate, but firm with my child. The group setting allowed for teaching my child to begin accepting responsibility for her actions. In addition, Ms. Fuller was fully committed to her mission in helping both my child as well as supporting the two of us as a family. As an aside, I was continually grateful that Ms. Fuller understands the issues of raising such a special needs child, not only from a professional standpoint but also from a personal one.
Prior to taking my child to TAP, I had worked with a number of “experts” who understood the numerous issues from a professional perspective only. It is both rare (in my experience) and extremely beneficial to work with someone who appreciates the very difficult parenting issues involved and who can so completely understand and support the parent(s) while still helping the child.
In short, I admire Ms. Fuller’s professional skills and knowledge as well as her understanding and compassion as a parent. In addition, for the first time since the adoption, I was allowed some much needed respite from the daily crises knowing that my child was safe, lovingly cared-for, and learning how to better live within the context of a family. My daughter is now back home and thriving in ways that she never did before entering the program at TAP.
I have deep respect for the Fullers and the TAP program and will forever be grateful that I was fortunate enough to find people – and a program – with such integrity.
